I have established in previous articles that the coffee grinder is one of the most important things when you want to make an espresso. Even more important than the espresso machine itself, obviously respecting the proportions. But what to do when you don’t have the budget for a more powerful coffee grinder (minimum RON 5,600), you don’t have the patience to put more money in the piggy bank and you’re tired of the «soup» obtained with vacuum-packed already ground coffee? Choose from the extraordinarily limited offering of «ultra entry level» coffee grinders. Since the Chinese market offers at every step, I said some time ago to focus on a brand in the sector!
So before I had the superb Cunill Tranquilo, I also had the Gaggia MM Steel. I was looking forward to it and was very disappointed with the espresso I was receiving. Something like:
Then, reading on external forums that many grinder models support «handmade» improvements, I said to try something in the case of MM Steel too. Victor, the Gaggia service man, helped me (but obviously not for free) and only then did I understand how simple it is! Careful:
1. With the motor running, set the coffee grinder to maximum fineness

2. Unplug the coffee grinder from the power supply
3. Gently remove the clear coffee cup on top and you will be revealed a black lid held by three clamps:
4. Using a thin, flat screwdriver, carefully unscrew (so as not to lose the warranty) the cover from the three terminals
5. After opening, lift the cap in the air exactly to the position it is in and, still in the air, rotate it until the indicator goes from «fine» (where it is at the beginning) to «medium» or even further back, between «medium» and «coarse»
6. Press the cover back until it snaps into the three clips
7. At this moment you have won half the race (or more) and can bring the knives even closer. Then, with the sharpener plugged back in, try moving towards «end» until you hear that «iron on iron» sound, which means the knives are too close together and is unpleasant if you don’t move them away immediately. The next step back will be the maximum limit that can be reached, the limit that can be marked with the white corrective paste.
By observing all the other rules for preparing an espresso (which I have summarized here) and using a good coffee together with a suitable tamper, you have a good chance of obtaining a satisfying espresso, especially if it is your first foray into this fascinating world. After “training” for a few months, I guarantee you will feel the need to upgrade to a more powerful grinder. That’s why my advice is to buy a better tool from the start, and not realize later that you need something else. Up to an Ascaso I-mini at 740 lei (with forum discounts) or a Lelit PL043MM (necessarily with MM in the queue) at 807 lei, it wouldn’t be a long distance, and the fact of getting a perfect coffee grinder for espresso, reliable and moreover continuous (total regulation, without steps), I think will compensate as it should the additional financial effort. However, if your budget is extremely limited, what you get with an MM Steel coffee grinder is not comparable to what you get from pre-ground coffee!
I also found a photo of an espresso obtained after «tuning». It’s a little different from the initial image, isn’t it?
Conclusion
For anyone passionate about espresso, the importance of a quality coffee grinder cannot be overstated. While many beginners focus their attention on purchasing an expensive espresso machine, experienced coffee enthusiasts understand that the grinder often has an even greater impact on the final result. Consistent grind size is essential for proper extraction, balanced flavor, and the rich crema that defines a well-prepared espresso. Without a capable grinder, even the most advanced espresso machine may struggle to produce satisfactory results.
However, not everyone has the budget to invest immediately in a high-end grinder. Premium models can be expensive, placing them beyond the reach of many coffee lovers who are just beginning their espresso journey. At the same time, relying on pre-ground coffee often leads to disappointing results, as freshness is quickly lost and grind consistency may not match the requirements of espresso brewing. This situation leaves many consumers searching for affordable alternatives that can bridge the gap between convenience and quality.
The emergence of ultra-entry-level coffee grinders has created new opportunities for those working with limited budgets. Although these grinders may not offer the precision, durability, or advanced features of professional-grade equipment, they can still provide a significant improvement over using pre-ground coffee. Freshly grinding coffee beans before brewing allows users to experience more vibrant aromas, richer flavors, and greater control over the extraction process.
The growing influence of Chinese manufacturers has also expanded the range of affordable grinders available on the market. Many brands now compete to offer budget-friendly solutions that deliver acceptable performance for home espresso enthusiasts. While these products may require compromises in terms of materials, consistency, or long-term reliability, they make specialty coffee more accessible to a wider audience.
Choosing an entry-level grinder should be viewed as a practical step rather than a final destination. It allows users to develop their skills, understand grind adjustments, and improve their brewing techniques while gradually saving for more advanced equipment in the future. For many coffee lovers, this progression represents a valuable learning experience that enhances their appreciation of the craft.
Ultimately, the perfect coffee setup does not have to begin with expensive equipment. By selecting a capable budget grinder and focusing on fresh coffee beans, users can dramatically improve the quality of their espresso without making a major financial commitment. The key is understanding that every upgrade, no matter how small, contributes to a better coffee experience and brings enthusiasts one step closer to achieving the espresso quality they desire.
