Slow coffee: new coffee experiences

coffee beans

You don’t need to be good at English to understand the name of the slow coffeeinstead, it is essential to know how to absorb a certain philosophyalmost an art of living. Welcome to a world, a trend that reinvents our relationship with coffee, that pushes us to promote patience and quality.

Slow life, slow coffeeAs inviting as the dance of the same name, at Cafés Méo, we are happy to accompany you on this sensorial adventure, where each cup becomes a true experience and enhances the aromas of your favorite coffee.

Slow coffee: what is it?

Slow coffee it cannot be reduced to a preparation method. It’s a philosophy, an invitation to slow down and savor every moment. Your cup of coffee is more than ever the protagonist of your gourmet ritual. Because, unlike coffee which we consume quickly, often quickly and whose objective is clearly a small boost of energy, slow coffee enhances patience. Take the time to let your coffee express all its aromas through a gentle and slow extraction. Take the time to perfume the whole house, like the memory of this comforting smell that comes out of the coffee pot on our grandparents’ sheath!

The origins of slow coffee

THE “new” slow coffee trend It’s actually very old! The movement is part of a larger trend of “slow life«, born in Italy in the 80s with Slow Food. The idea was (already) to support a sweeter, slower and above all environmentally friendly life. Slow coffee is therefore directly influenced by this state of mind, having quality and sensorial experience as my belief.

Also known as Gentle extraction methodthe process is the opposite of that used to prepare espresso, which uses a small amount of water pushed at very high pressure. Slow coffee is made by drop, so as to preserve most of the coffee’s aromas and a supposedly less bitter taste.

How to prepare slow coffee

Preparing a slow coffee requires engaging in a ritual, where every detail, every step, every gesture counts. This celebration of the senses is worth celebrating, and you will find just as much pleasure in taking the time to appreciate them the processthan tasting the final result.

Which coffee to choose?

coffee beans

The choice of cereals is necessarily crucial. Give priority high quality beansfreshly toasted. At Cafés Méo we recommend varieties of arabicarenowned for their complex aromas and subtle notes. Single-origin coffees, such as Blue Mountain from Jamaica or Bourbon Pointu from Reunion Island, offer rich flavor profiles that lend themselves perfectly to this method.

The steps for a perfect slow coffee

  • Fresh ground: Grind your beans just before preparation to maintain all their freshness. There grind it must be adapted to the chosen method, neither too fine nor too coarse.
  • Precise dosing: Use a scale to weigh the coffee and water. In general, 60 g of coffee per 1 liter of water.
  • Water temperature: The water must be heated between 90 and 95°C, avoid boiling water so as not to deteriorate the aromas.
  • Infusion lens: The water should be slowly poured over the ground coffee with circular movements. Leave to infuse for the time necessary for the magic to work (between 3 and 4 minutes).

The benefits of slow coffee

You will have understood, slow coffee is not just a passing fad and has enough advantages to interest you. Between taste, quality of your coffee, your ritual, your ecological footprint (waste reduction) or simply your pleasure, it’s real overall experience.

A relaxing ritual

Neither more nor less than an invitation to take time, to slow down, the preparation of your slow coffee is in fact a ritual. A relaxing break that brings you back to the essentials, flavors, smells, a special moment and suspended in complete relaxation.

A healthier drink

By choosing high-quality beans and using this gentle method, you reduce acidity and bitterness coffees prepared quickly. Enough to get an extra cup pure, rich in aromas, balanced and gentler on your stomach.

Which coffee maker to choose?

Several coffee makers I am at your disposal, depending on your tastes, the place and the time you wish to dedicate to this coffee moment, to be shared (or not…).

The siphon coffee maker

a siphon coffee maker on a wooden counter inside a cozy cafe, with various coffee equipment and potted plants in the background.

This method echoes the history of Cafés Méo. We have always been keen to support our customers, especially catering professionals, in the preparation of their coffee to offer real experiences to their guests. The siphon coffee maker (also called vacuum) it has an impressive alchemist design and a very interesting taste result. Using a back and forth system, the water passes through the ground multiple times. The water in the lower bulb is heated until boiling, the steam rises into the upper bulb where the ground coffee is located due to the pressure, then the condensation that forms falls on the grounds and finally descends into the lower bulb due to the effect of gravity. This gives an extremely aromatic coffeea real nectar!

Chemex

a chemex coffee pot with brewed coffee sits next to a bag of ethiopian mocha coffee beans on a wooden counter in a kitchen.

With its harmonious and decorative design, it is the slow coffee method par excellence! It is inspired by the electric filter coffee maker that we know well but allows you to control the flow of water that infuses the coffee and its temperature. It involves pouring the water in several stages, making circular movements over the entire surface of the filter to wet the ground coffee in order to slowly extract all the aromas.

The Cafflano

THE Cafflano It is also called a «nomadic» coffee machine because it is compact and multitasking. You just have to find a way to boil waterfall Neighbor. Contains everything else for a freshly brewed coffee. It allows you to grind coffee beans directly thanks to an integrated coffee grinder! It has a filter anda thermal mug as a bonus for keeping the coffee hot. Ideal for a slow coffee while hiking, in the office or on vacation!

The French press coffee maker

A French press full of coffee sits on a wooden kitchen counter, next to a bag of meo coffee beans. A white coffee cup and saucer are positioned in the background.

One of the simplest and most accessible methods for beginnersfor excellent quality! You will get a very full-bodied, powerful coffee, but without bitterness. It is advisable to taste the so-called «pure origin» coffees (where there is no blend of beans) to rediscover the characteristic aromas of the terroir of this origin. But be careful when grinding the coffee! It must be coarse so that the grounds do not pass through the filter built into this coffee maker. The advantage of this technique is complete control over the brewing time before filtering and therefore the potency of the final result.

The aeropress

The Aeropress, like the Cafflano, is the coffee maker ideal for backpackers ! When tasting, however, it will give a result much closer to espresso. This is the method furthest from filter coffee, although ultimately the process is very close to the French press.

Much more than a simple method, slow coffee is an invitation to rediscover coffee from a new perspective. Enjoy every nuance, transform every cup into a moment of authentic pleasurecombining tradition and innovation. Now are you ready to slow down and enjoy Méo bars?
